Fair Trade

Mamacuna Traders works with many Fair Trade producers and wholesales of Fair Trade products, as well as, artisan groups practicing Fair Trade, or in the process of certification by their country. Fair Trade is more than a stamp of approval from an organization. It is a way of doing business that makes life better for the producer, the seller, and the customer.

At Mamacuna Traders we pay approximately 50% of the cost of goods up front to the producer groups. This provides them with the cash flow to buy the materials they need to make their crafts. The prices the producers set are non-negotiable so that the artisans are assured of making a living wage while working in a healthy environment with normal working hours.

Fair Trade promises:
  • To pay producers a fair compensation for their products.
  • To work with small businesses, cooperatives, or associations as an alternative to large scale manufacturing, to help them access credit, reduce raw material costs and establish competitive pricing for their products, so that the profits they receive are reinvested in community projects.
  • Ensure safe and healthy working conditions.
  • Follow environmentally friendly practices to maintain sustainability of local resources.
  • Products are purchased directly from producers, taking out the middle-man. Producers are often financed by direct loans, prepayment or other sources of financing.
  • Educate consumers about the importance of purchasing products that are fairly traded to support living wages and healthy working conditions.
  • Maintain a transparent and accountable business practice.
  • Provide for gender equality in pay and recognition for their participation in the production and process. Empower women.
  • Help build producers’ independence and access to new markets by alleviating poverty and creating opportunities for producers who have been marginalized by traditional supply chains or are economically disadvantaged.
